24 Hours in the Salton Sea 9/30
The Salton Sea has been a desired destination for sometime. I was commissioned to shoot a portrait of Leonard Knight, the oldest living Folk artist. I was excited. Jumped on an early flight and off to the desert.

Then the domino effect started in quickly. Extremely late getting to SFO. Thought I was going to miss my flight. Telling the cab driver to speed!! Between SFO security and getting off the plane my License vanished. No rental car in the desert = sitting at the airport for 6 hours till my flight goes back and not getting the job done. Not an option. After an hour on the phone I found a ride. 15 minutes later Sandy (who I have now known for 5 minutes) hands me the keys to her car and says “Have fun, call me when you get back”. People like Sandy even out all the bullshit of the world. Off to the Salton Sea trying my best not to speed considering I didn’t have a license.

After getting lost for another hour I find my way. This is a picture of the nothingness of where I was heading. Meanwhile the local law enforcement feels the need to follow me for 20 miles leaving not a moment to relax and enjoy the scenery. Copper leaves and ten miles later another one follows. Nothing but a cop and myself with miles of open road. Ugh…but no pull over.

Success! Slab City = the only place in America you can live for free and in the middle of nowhere. No Electricity or water but good old American free living. Mad Max style.

and Salvation Mountain my destination

Amazing place but no sign of Leonard! He owns no phone and electricity. He has been sleeping in the back of a truck in a sleeping bag for last 30 years. After waiting for an hour I decide to head into the small town and see if anyone could help me locate him. No luck. After 2 hours I found Leonard and had about 15 minutes to talk, shoot, and run back to catch my flight. One film shot for you of this very kind man.

Speeding back. Wanting to stop and shoot everything I saw from the road but no time got to catch the flight. Running into the airport and I miss my flight. The airline employee also brings to my attention that I will have to be searched for a good amount of time when flying with no I.D. There were also no more flights for the night. What airport has no flights after 5:30 p.m.? Went outside feeling defeated and I sit in gum. Having brought no extra clothes thinking I wasn’t staying for a sleepover I got to lug some gum around with me for the next 14 hours until I got home. That’s just the way it goes right? Mission Accomplished though.
